What we do

Providing insight into current modalities of diaspora humanitarian initiatives by undertaking evaluation of diaspora initiatives’ capacities and interventions, their networks and linkages with the formal humanitarian sector, local partners and affected communities;

Building technical and operational capacity of diaspora actors and their local partners, and formal humanitarian actors awareness and collaboration capacity by providing online training and improving intra- and inter-diaspora coordination and peer learning ;

Fostering links between diaspora actors, local and international coordination mechanisms, as well as improving data sharing to facilitate information exchange to address and reduce identified gaps in knowledge, perception and coordination on both sides;

Supporting the diaspora organisations that endorsed the Diaspora WHS commitments to live up and achieve the 17 commitments submitted at the World Humanitarian Summit;

Developing recommendations for improved operational and strategic communication and coordination between diasporas and humanitarian actors.

Through increased awareness raising, advocacy and information exchanges, DEMAC is building on and further strengthening its unique position and strong network with relevant diaspora actors and formal humanitarian agencies such as OCHA, the Inter-Agency Standing Committee, UNHCR, IOM, DRC, etc., as well as with key donors.

DEMAC actively harnesses opportunities for equitable, sustainable collaboration and partnerships between diaspora organisations and other humanitarian actors. DEMAC focus countries have been Somalia, Syria, Sierra Leone and Nigeria until 2019. In 2020, DEMAC will include new focus countries. DEMAC’s ultimate aim is to work with diaspora in all relevant humanitarian crises.
