Diaspora response to earthquake destruction

On March 28, 2025, a powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar, the largest to hit the country in more than a century, and the impact has been devastating. As of April 24, the earthquake has caused over 3500 deaths and injured nearly 5000. Affected population has risen to nearly 300,000 people. Six regions have been declared under a state of emergency by Myanmar's National Disaster Management Committee:

  1. Mandalay Region
  2. Sagaing Region
  3. Magway Region
  4. Northeastern Shan State
  5. Naypyitaw Council Territory
  6. Bago Region

Relief operations are ongoing with focus shifting from search and rescue to recovery and humanitarian assistance. International aid has been requested and is being coordinated, with multiple agencies working to provide emergency shelter, food, water, and medical assistance. Beyond widespread destruction to infrastructure, the earthquake has significantly worsened an already critical humanitarian situation in Myanmar. The country was already experiencing a protracted crisis due to ongoing armed conflict since the 2021 military coup. Prior to the earthquake, 19.9 million people (over one-third of the population) were in need of humanitarian assistance. The Myanmar authorities have officially requested international aid.

DEMAC is dedicated to enhancing Myanmar diaspora engagement in humanitarian response, recognizing diasporas' crucial role in making a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by the current crisis.
